Oh, the night it opens up like
Ten-thousand eyes in the sky
She holds my mind, it throws the fight
Like the leaves give their color when they die
Oh, the battle lines are forming
Fall, Summer, and Spring
But when flowers grow even they must know
That ol' Jack Frost is king
How the wind brings back the cold
Stirring up all the banks of snow
All the things I should've known
I can't take another winter on my own
Now I'm weary of the writing
And I've grown tired of these songs
They feel as bare as the frozen air
When no one sings along
How the wind brings back the cold
Stirring up all the banks of snow
All the things I should've known
I can't take another winter on my own
Oh, I believe in love
But it won't believe in me
It's everywhere I go
In everyone I see
How the wind brings back the cold
Stirring up all the banks of snow
All the things I should've known
I can't take another winter
I can't take another winter
No I can't take another winter
On my own

Billy Dyer
05:29
|
|||
Billy Dyer was a postcard writer
Traveling the whole world 'round
Sent letters to his folks
To tell them all about
The things that he found
I never met him but it sure upset me
When I heard Billy was gone
Billy Dyer must have lit a fire
Somewhere deep in my bones
My mother Mildred raised some mighty fine children
There were seven in all
Despite my education
And the way my mother raised me
Lord, I still heard the call
When I set out on the road
No one told me just how lonely I'd be
Or of the time I would waste
Trying to raise enough change
To pay the cost of being free
Let your legs go where they'll go
Let your heart roam
Home is never home
For the children of the road
I tried to write but couldn’t justify
All of the mistakes that I’d made
So instead of writing letters
I figured postcards would better
Keep demons at bay
Never revealing the regret I was feeling
For not facing my fears
Only places on a map
And some writing on the back
That said “Wish you were here.”
Let your legs go where they'll go
Let your heart roam
Home is never home
For the children of the road
If home is where the heart is
What if your heart’s broken
If sorry’s where the start is
What if it’s unspoken
One day the road may bring me back to you
Mother Mildred raised some mighty fine children
There were seven in all
But because of Billy Dyer
One fell in the fire
Trying to stand up too tall

December Third
04:43
|
|||
I was born on the third of December
And I, I was friends with the wind and cold
I listened in as the men in the shadows
Sang "how long must we wait oh Lord?"
I found some hope in the arms of a lover and
I saw a compass in the brown of her eyes
She moved around like the wind takes a ribbon
Towards the January sky
And, ooh, I was torn in two
The sky was blue
Now it's grey and used
I always love it when my mother sang that melody and
I heard my lover sing the same old song
I tried to catch on but it fell flat in front of me
And now those words are gone
So i tried finding new ways of saying things that
Someone else said a lifetime ago
But the echos of the past only resonate
What everybody knows
Ooh, I was torn in two
The sky was blue
Now it's grey and used
I found that life is like the changing of the seasons and
Sometimes the warm mingles in with the cold
But I can still hear the men in the shadows sing, "how long must we wait, oh Lord?"
Ooh, the sky will tear in two
All we used will be made brand new

Christmas Day
04:20
|
|||
While the ice is on the river
And the snow's out on the road
I guess you won't be going home
And I wont be all alone
Yeah you could always brave the weather
But I wish you wouldn't try
Cause there's a storm brewing outside
Just stay here one more night
There's a lot that we could talk about
A lot that we could do
A lot of books I haven't read
That I could read to you
And when the silent night surrounds us
And the world goes dark outside
It will feel like Christmas time
Honey I'm not in a hurry
Darlin' all we've got is time
So lets not rush a thing tonight
Let's try and get this right
We could let tomorrow worry
For itself a little while
Yeah we could dance away our lives
If only for one night
We could talk about past loves,
Our future plans and present fears
We could talk of resolutions
That we will make in coming years
And as we laugh about the things
We'll never do and never try
It will feel like Christmas time
If you get to feeling tired
And start to think that you should leave
You're free to do just as you please
But you're safest here with me
I would rather say good night to you
Than good bye any way
And as the night becomes too cold for us
Together we could lay
When you wake up the morning
And the sun light warms your face
It will feel like Christmas Day

Only
05:03
|
|||
Why not marry me
Down in the oak grove
And we'll dance while the wind takes melody
We could cut ourselves free
I'll worry 'bout you
And baby, you'll only worry 'bout me
I was a fool
Believing all my life
That the hammer wouldn't
Hit the nail 'til it was time
I'm only living when I'm in your life
I'm only breathing when I'm in your sky
I'm only singing when you give the line
I'm only lovin' if it's you that's mine
On our way to sea
We can skip all the waves babe
We'll take it slow and easy
If you're on that river with me
I'll be your Ol' Yeller Damn
And you'll be my riverboat queen
Just like a child, I thought that I'd be fine
Like there was anyone else
Could keep me satisfied
I'm only living when I'm in your life
I'm only breathing when I'm in your sky
I'm only singing when you give the line
I'm only smiling when I'm by your side
Yeah you proved me wrong
And joined my verse to your song
